4.      2v2 Quick Attacking, Soccer Drills

Setup

  1. Create a grid approximately 25X40 yards. This is a large field for 2v2, but this is intentional as it will create more breakaway situations and will encourage players to attack the space while going to goal.
  2. Place a small goal or Pugg goal on each end line.
  3. Split the team into 2 equal groups, one with an alternate jersey color.
  4. Assign each player a partner on his team. These players will continue to be teammates throughout the entire soccer drill.
  5. Assign each team a goal to defend.
  6. 2 players from each team step out to play 2v2. The remaining players should line up across their defensive end line with a large supply of balls.

 Instructions

  1. Play 2v2 inside the grid to the small goals.
  2. If a team gets scored on they step off and two new team members step on with the ball. They look to get a quick attack on the team that just scored.
  3. As a team scores they must quickly transition to stop the quick attack.
  4. The scoring team stays on the field and plays 2v2 until they get scored on.
  5. If the ball goes out of bounds, the ball restarts from a teammate on their end line. Players only switch after their group gets scored on.
  6. First team to 20 wins.

  3. 2 players from each team should align themselves diagonally across the field from each other at two of the corners (outside the grid).
  4. The remaining players play 2v2 inside the grid.

 Instructions

  1. Players play 2v2 in the middle of the grid and attempt to play one of their outlet players on their team.
  2. Once a pass is made to the outside player the players switch, so the outside players dribbles or passes in to their teammate and plays 2v2. The player passing to the outside player takes his spot and becomes the target player at his cone.
  3. The new attacker play 2v2 in attempt to combine with their teammate at the other corner. If corner is denied by the defending players, the team should play to their most open diagonal player in attempt to keep possession of the ball.
  4. If the defensive team wins the ball they become the attackers and attempt to keep possession as described above.

 Variations

  • Expand the grid and play 3v3 in the middle of the grid.
  • Limit the number of touches.

 Coaching Points

  • Players should play with speed and constantly moving to open up and give options to the player with the ball.
  • Make sure supporting players give the ball handler good supporting angles and is getting into undefended space in order to receive the pass.
  • Passes should be made to keep possession and players should keep scanning the field in attempt to find the most space and least amount of pressure.

6.      Triangle, Goal, Soccer, Game

Setup

  1. Create a grid about 35X35. You can adjust the grid larger or smaller depending on the age and skill level of your players.
  2. Create a triangle in the middle of the grid (about 5 yards each side) with training sticks or flags to serve as a goal.
  3. Place a goalkeeper inside the triangle.
  4. Split the group into two even teams of 4v4 or 5v5.

 Instructions

  1. Instruct both teams to attack the three-sided goal.
  2. The Goalkeeper should defend all three sides of the goal.
  3. If a team scores a goal a point is awarded to the team and the ball is live on the other side of the goal.
  4. If the goalkeeper makes a save, he is to distribute the ball into open space away from players.
  5. For a goal to count, the ball must cross through the goal no higher than the top of the flag or training stick.

  • Only allow a shot on goal after X number of passes.
  • Play in 1 or 2 touches.

 Coaching Points

  • Focus on on all aspects of the game such as passing, receiving, moving with and without the ball, defending, attacking, and finishing.
  • The players will have to work together as a team to quickly off-balance the defender and catch the goalkeeper off guard.

7.      Combination, Shooting, Finishing, Soccer, Drill

Setup

  1. Using half of the soccer field, place a keeper in the goal.
  2. About 18 yards from goal, set two cones about 5 yards apart that are placed perpendicular to the goal. The first shooter starts between these two cones.
  3. Place a cone equal to each side of the penalty box about 10 yards from the top of the box. Place a player on each of these cones.
  4. Place another cone in the middle of the field about 10 yards from the side cones.
  5. The shape of the cones should be in a diamond with the cone closest to the goal having a small window.
  6. his window will be used as a passing reference for the player to receive the ball as they check into this space.
  7. The remaining players should be positioned at the cone farthest from goal with a ball each.

 Instructions

  1. Player 1 passes the ball to player 2 and follows his pass.
  2. Player 2 then passes to player 3 between the cones as player 3 is checking through the cones.
  3. Player 2 follows his pass and checks into the cones in the middle.
  4. Player 3 should have a touch with their back to the goal towards their far side and finish with a right footed shot on goal.
  5. As Player 2 is making the pass to player 3, the new player 1 makes a pass to player 4 and follows his pass.
  6. Player 4 passes into the new player 3 who is checking-in between the cones.
  7. Player 3 has a tight touch and turn with their back to the goal towards the back side and finishes with a left footed shot.
  8. Player 1 will then pass to player 2 and the same pattern is followed.

 Variations

  • Play all touches in 1-touch.
  • Move the cones farther apart and work on flighted balls into each player.
  • Have a passive defensive player apply pressure on the back of the shooter to simulate a defender putting pressure on the attacker. Make sure the shooter does not expose the ball to the defender.

 Coaching Points

  • Focus on crisp passes and well timed movement.
  • The shooter should have a clean, quick turn while keeping his back to goal until he comes out of his turn for the shot.
  • Play with speed.
  • Finish on goal.

8.      Pass, possession, passing possession, passing soccer drill

Setup

  • Create a grid approximately 40 yards x 30 yards. Split players into 2 even teams with two other players as neutral players. The neutral players are positioned at the endline on each end of the field.

 Instructions

  • The two teams attempt to hold possession from each other within the grid. To score a goal, a team must make 5 or more consecutive passes to their teammates and then must make the 6th pass to either of the neutral players. If the ball is touched or won by the opposition, the pass count is reset.
  • Once the neutral player receives a scoring pass they must pass the ball in one touch to the team that scored and their pass count is reset.
  • Play to 10 and make the losing team do pushups or situps.

 Variations

  • Restrict players touch to 2-touches or 1-touch. If a player exceeds the max number of touches they lose possession.

 Coaching Points

  •  Awareness - make sure players keep their heads up, and know where their teammates are at all time. This will allow the passer to play quicker and pass to the open player.
  • Speed of play - make sure players are playing quickly. The speed of supporting players as well as the player on the ball will dictate the overall speed of play.
  • Quality Support from Teammates - Teammates must support the player receiving the pass before the pass is received. The player with the ball needs at least 2 players giving him direct support and at least 1 player giving him indirect support by stretching the field and creating space.
  • Movement - Players should continiously be make runs to create space and time when receiving passes.
  • Evade defenders - Make quick change of direction, change of speed runs to escape defenders and create space to receive a pass.

9.      Soccer, Combination, Shooting, Rotation, Drill, Shooting Drills

Setup

  • With two goals facing each other about 30 yards apart, place a goalkeeper in each goal. Set three flags at midfield on the left, center, and right sides of the field. On the left and right flags, place a cone 5 yards past the flags and set a player at each of these cones. Two players should start at the center flag, one player for each side of the drill. The remaining players should start along the endline with a ball each.

 Instructions

  • Player 1 plays a ball into player 2. Player 2 checks to the ball and plays it back to player 1. Player 1 plays the ball into player 3. Player 3 lays off a ball to player 2. Player 2 has a timed run around the flag and shoots 1st time on goal. All players rotate forward one position (Player 1 becomes Player 2, Player 2 Becomes Player 3, Player 3 shags the ball).

 Variations

  • Limit all passes and touches to ONE-TOUCH.

 Coaching Points

  • Good solid passes, play in 1 touch if possible.
  • Good timed movement and runs (don't get there too early).
  • Player prepping the touch for the shooter should simply lay the ball off for a good 1 time shot.
  • Good shooting form leaning forward through the ball, and landing on the kicking foot.

10.         Soccer Diamond Passing Combination

Setup

  1. Set up 4 cones in the shape of an elongated diamond.
  2. Assign an all time passer on each of the two cones where the points of the diamond are closest.
  3. Rotate these passers every 3-5 minutes. In our diagram, the passers are in red.

 Instructions

  1. Have the first player in line pass to one of the passers and overlap them.
  2. The passer that receives the first pass plays a first time ball into the other passer who then returns the ball to the player overlapping.
  3. The player then plays into the next player in line and the pattern repeats going the other direction.

 Variations

  • Play every pass 1-touch.
  • Expand the distance between cones and play longer balls in the air.

 Coaching Points

  • Focus on clean, crisp passing.
  • Movement off the ball must be timed with the pass.
  • The drill should flow with a continuous passing pattern.
  • Focus on speeding up the combination play.
